First Day in Toronto

Some of you know that the first few posts are already up for Toronto! So yes, this is a late post, but it’s the long weekend and I was reminiscing back on the warm summer months~

P8181960.JPG

We arrived by train right to the heart of Toronto, and it was so exciting to see the big tall buildings everywhere, the infrastructure, the people… it was like being in Japan again for me!

P8181970.JPG

We loved how the layout of the buildings were put together, and everything was just something begging to be photographed. Love the city hall!

P8181967.JPG

I’m kind of glad we don’t have late night food stands outside back at home, or else I’d be a balloon by now. (Yes, I eventually gave in one night in Toronto).

P8181994.JPG

I’m a sucker for flowers. The other day I bought some to give to a friend’s grand opening event and my heart just stopped because $50 still got me a small vase of mixed arrangements.

P8182003.JPG

First stop to eat before checking in was light cafe. Definitely went up on my favourites list and if I had the chance to go again I would! A post will be made soon on this place!

P8182074.JPG

I was sad that I lost my lens cap for my camera before we went down to the subway to head to Casa Loma.

P8182086.JPG

As much as we tried to cram as much into our itinerary we were just a bit short time in getting to go into casa loma :(. There was a wedding going on and was slightly tempted to crash it haha.

P8182156.JPG

We headed to the museum next and tried to be as strategic as possible (basically powerwalking through areas that were lower priority on the list to see).

P8182181.JPG

We met up with an old time friend, Joyce! Had some good ramen that was worth the wait!

P8182230.JPG

Like all tourists, we needed to end the night in taking pictures in front of the sign! And yes, like all tourists we waited for certain colours to appear to take the shot.

P8182238.JPG

We lined up for Uncle Tetsu’s and went around trying to find a place to eat it (it was super late). We thought maybe a bar would let us. We went to Drake One Fifty! And in case you’re wondering, no, they didn’t let outside food :(.

Quickread is done! Next post would be my attempt at making a Japanese Cheesecake similar to Uncle Tetsu’s!

Let me know if you had questions about our itinerary! We jam packed everything in two and a half days!

Day Before Cruise Trip!

We arrived in Fort Lauderdale prior to the Royal Caribbean Cruise! It’s very common for many people to stay one night here before heading out to the port in the early morning!

img_5765.jpg

It was our first red-eye flight and we discovered it is probably not for us. We barely got any sleep and were super exhausted when we arrived. Which contributed to us not really wanting to explore around as much by the time we arrived.

IMG_5773.JPG

We hailed a cab and asked them to drop us off at E Las Olas Bvld. It was somewhat close to our accommodation and it had tonnes of restaurants to choose from. I can’t quite remember which restaurant I had set my sights on from prior research… but we eventually settled for a place called Gran Forno Pronto.

IMG_5777

IMG_5780.JPG

The service was friendly, and because we still had our luggage with us they found a spot just outside for us to sit with our belongings.

Here’s a look at the menu if you wanted to see what they have! Just click on it to enlarge.

IMG_5787.JPG

We were all thinking we probably should’ve tried the pizza here because it seemed like it was their specialty, but we really weren’t up for it, especially in the morning.

IMG_5788.JPG

This is the lasagna alla bolognese dish. As you can see, they were generous with the meat! The tomato sauce tasted fresh and a bit tangy.

IMG_5791.JPG

I got the sausage and peppers wood-baked sandwich. It was yummy, but I have to admit it was hard to eat and I ended up dismantling it into smaller pieces to eat. The sausages are really packed with flavour and a bit of spice. The peppers were sweet to compliment that spice!

IMG_5806.JPG

We were finally able to check into our airbnb, and after a few territorial agreements (;p), lying around and absorbing as much A/C as possible–We decided to set on a mini adventure to see what was around us.

img_5811.jpg

Along our mini-adventure, all by foot, we found a Macdonald!! I was craving the filet-o-filet so badly. (There’s just something about the ones made in the states that make it so yummy!)

IMG_5814.JPG

Okay back to the more important matters, we decided to find real food before it got darker. Thanks to Brenton for being able to search up something and found some place that had good ratings nearby.

IMG_5817.JPG

If you are really big on atmosphere and an overall look of a restaurant you wouldn’t really be impressed with this place. But we’re more about the food and would definitely consider this place as a hidden gem!

IMG_5815.JPG
IMG_5816.JPG

There’s some nice variety in selection in the menus! The service is super friendly, a very homely feeling.

IMG_5820.JPG

I got a green apple soda to refresh myself. The green apple flavour is subtle, but if you were looking for something really carbonated (it makes me feel better for some reason) then I’d suggest this.

IMG_5822.JPG

To start us off, they gave us free appetizers. Chips and Salsa!

IMG_5823.JPG

This is the moment we were waiting for. TACOS. I think we ordered the Al Pastor (marinated pork) and Asada (steak). The service paid a lot of attention to us, because right before we started eating they asked if we wanted gloves too!

IMG_5831.JPG

Nancy ordered the Al Pastor and I would hands down recommend it. So juicy and flavourful. As for the steak, it was good too, but a bit tougher and drier to my liking. And not as big of a fan of the tortillas. It was bit too soggy and tough.

IMG_5825.JPG

I think Brenton was super hungry and got the chicken burrito 🙂 . It came with a side of beans and rice.

IMG_5826.JPG

When it arrived we could tell that the burrito was going to be super filling haha.

IMG_5830.JPG

I decided to try a tamale as it looked cute (yes, I am one of those people who fall victim to cute things and emotional marketing). We all agreed on that this is probably not something we’d order again. The meat was dry and we didn’t find it to have much flavour. That and we were probably so full on carbs that having more masa harina (corn flour)- based dishes was more than we could handle.

There you have it! The last meal before we set off early in the morning, with our kind airbnb host downstairs that helped us call a cab.

Arriving at Port Everglades!

Day 2 Harmony of the Seas Cruise Trip

Day 2 we decided to try out the breakfast in bed. We were really tired and all I can remember is Nancy answering a call and moments later opening the door… some guy walked in. I think I looked around. Half confused… And then Nancy mumbled something and turned off the lights and we went back to bed. :’D

IMG_5966

The strawberries weren’t sweet… neither was the watermelon. We had a theory that they saved the sweetest fruit for the VIPs haha. Oh! And they had lactose-free milk option for Nancy which is absolutely awesome!

PSSSST. We actually went to the gym on this day! Even ran on the track that is half inside the deck and outside! It was so nicee.

IMG_5968

LUNCH at the Solarium❗ This was a buffet place, but did I do a good job in presentation? 😀 Just kidding… not really hehe.

My favourite from this plate was…the fish (you must get the lemon slice, makes it taste much better) and the curry!
IMG_5969

This was my second plate (I won’t show you the other plates… things got a bit messy after that :p). After being on the ship and eating unhealthily I really appreciate being able to have fruits and vegetables everyday!

Next stop was taking pictures at Central park! It had beautiful flowers, Shrek walking around, and lovely live guitar playing in the background. Notice how I was still kind of pale… be prepared for the next days… I tan so easily.

IMG_5994

We finally waited till our reservation time at Jamie Oliver’s restaurant! We’ve been watching and reading about Jamie Oliver and was so excited to try this out.

It was a tight fit inside and the place soon quickly filled up.

Here’s the menu for you (actually for me to remember what I ate). Once again we learnt we could order as much as we like… ain’t no stopping us now.

IMG_6004

They started us off with this bread platter with your usual balsamic vinegar and olive oil dressing on the side.

IMG_6010

Next came the cured meat platter. Perfect for sharing (a little too much for us).  Our favourites were the prosciutto & schiacciata piccante.

IMG_6016

img_6019.jpg

Sorry for the quality of the photos. I didn’t have my camera yet!

The caper berry provides a piquant flavour that really helped us get through that meat platter.

IMG_6005

Nancy’s prosciutto and melon is by far my favourite out of the appetizers everyone got. (Or maybe I had too much meat and cheeses that my taste buds needed something sweet). Though a definite recommend, it’s a nice light appetizer to start off.

IMG_6009

Justin got the tomato and ricotta bruschetta. He said this tasted really good. I’m sorry I’m not much help since I’m not a big fan of raw tomatoes. I know. Heartbreaking. Sorry :(. Though I love everything else that uses tomatoes!

IMG_6022

I got the crispy squid! I’m not sure why I love chewing on tentacles hmm but this was really good. The mayo had some paprika, though I felt the paprika was used more of a decorative reasoning than for flavour.

IMG_6025

Mmmm yummy. I’m actually really lucky that my friends are always the best and save the tentacles for me :3

IMG_6026

Nancy got the truffle tagliatelle (see a trend here? haha). The black truffle produces such a deep flavour. However, with the cream and all the meat and cheese and deep-fried food we had, it really made it hard to fully enjoy and finish this dish. (Yeah yeah we should’ve ordered less is what you’re probably thinking right? :p) Plus the noodles seemed unevenly cooked or perhaps cooled so that certain edges were tough.

IMG_6030

I think Brenton ordered this. Can’t remember how he enjoyed this but I shall update later!

IMG_6035

I got the dry-aged rib eye steak. Bit uneven cooking when cut into but still tender (obviously). For those who haven’t tried dry-aged beef, essentially the collagen is broken down and you’re left with a tender piece of meat. The taste is like a blend of gamey and beefiness (is that even a word?!).

IMG_6043

Look at the juices! Oh boy.

IMG_6037

Justin ordered the risotto caprese. This was by far the most disappointing dish. It didn’t live up to its “cream[iness]”. The rice was hard and just ruined the dish.

IMG_6040

Luckily Justin’s lam chops scottadita made up for it. This is the second best lamb chops I’ve ever tasted! I’m not a big fan of lamb due to the gamey taste but there was none to be found! I can’t imagine the effort they went into making this.

IMG_6041

This was our first time trying polenta and it was so salty. Unbelievably salty.

IMG_6044

This was also so salty and oily that I needed to cradle it in my hands to take a picture. We think this was broccolini (mix between broccoli and gai lan).

And that puts an end…. wait, we forgot about dessert. Crap.

IMG_6045

While on the ship you’ll have these photographers that will come around to take your pictures. This guy was especially enthusiastic (in taking Nancy’s picture huehue).

IMG_6046

The “Can we eat yet Michelle” look.

IMG_6047

This was a super rich brownie.

IMG_6048IMG_6049

IMG_0112

I have no words for dessert because it was a blur due to how full we all were. All I can remember is trying to pawn off which pieces we would eat to try to put a dent in it. When the server told us he had a surprise for us, we certainly didn’t imagine this!

IMG_6054

After such a big meal we needed to walk it off. here’s a view from the top! The Jamie Oliver restaurant is the glowing red sign at the bottom left corner.

IMG_6055

We booked a show to end off the night! The aqua theatre!

IMG_6070

The guy tricked us into thinking he was going to jump into the water from that height :(.

All I can think about was feeling really full and falling asleep to a movie at night….

Stay tuned weeeee.
