12. Blackball 黑丸 (I)

My Overall score: 4.1/5

Nancy’s score: 4/5

Ordered:

  • #2 Matcha Series: Matcha Jelly/Matcha Pudding, Red Bean, Boba, Sweet Potato Balls ($8.99)
  • #8 Crushed Ice Series: Mango Crushed Ice ($8.99)

A Taiwanese dessert place in the West side! They have bubble tea too, but I’d say it’s their shaved ice dessert and “soup” desserts that they do best. They specialize in grass jelly desserts– this is what I’m excited about. There are many benefits to eating grass jelly and has been done by many Asian cultures. Grass jelly is known for Vitamin A, B, high fibre. But the one thing that my family always said is it helps “cool” the internal body when you’ve eaten too much fried or fatty foods. (I can go on and on but it’s complicated to explain haha)

Presentation:                    4.3/5

Nancy gave a 4. We love the trays the dessert comes in, but the quality of the presentation of the desserts differed on which one you got. I really liked the one I got since it has beautiful contrast of colours. (You FEAST with your EYES!)

Health:                                  4/5

It’s difficult to say because it depends on the type of dessert you get. (The grass jelly desserts are healthier). While the ingredients are not that unhealthy (mochi, red bean, grass jelly, etc), it was mainly the sugar that we knocked off points for. It is not a triple chocolate kind of sweetness but with all that syrup and condensed milk, it’s probably not the healthiest right? THOUGH it is a lot less sweeter than many other places that sell bingsu or 雪冰 kind of ice desserts. Nancy gave a 3.5.

Atmosphere/location: 4.2/5

The inside is pleasant and clean, and can seat around 30 people. The location is kind of hard to reach but it is nice that we have something in the westside! Nancy gave a 4. I apologize for the terrible picture (you have to admit I’m doing pretty well as it is quite embarassing for me to just go around taking shots of the insides of places ><“)

Cost:                                  3.7/5

Comparing to other locations I’ve been to, I’d say this is around average pricing for the ice desserts. Also note that we would recommend if you’re coming here after eating a meal, to share one dessert among two people!

The bubble tea is quite expensive though for the smaller sizes, but I did hear they use better tea leaves and real fruit in their drinks? Nancy said 4.

Taste:                                4.6/5

Nancy gave a 4.8. She felt it was missing one thing but couldn’t quite put a finger on it. Compared to other places, I liked this a lot. Many places tend to skip out on putting much syrup or flavour into the ice, or I would find lots of uneven ice chunk pieces (which really ruin the eating experience). We definitely felt there was a good ratio of toppings to eat with the shaved ice too!

#2 Matcha series

I love the matcha pudding surprise hidden under the ice! There was flavour throughout the dessert and the boba is a nice texture and sweetness too! The only thing we were a bit disappointed was the sweet yam mochi balls (wish it had a stronger yam flavour to it or something).

Mango Crushed Ice Series

I couldn’t decide which side to show you guys so I’m just giving you the viewing pleasure of both! (See, presentation changes with angles and sides ahahha).  This was yummy! Though I made sure to take less bites of it since it was overpowering my matcha one… and I love matcha! My favourite topping is the lychee pieces hands down mm mmm good. Nancy’s dessert was a TOWERING mountain of shaved ice. It was flavourful but it was way bigger than mine and we had leftovers (being the asian we were we brought it home XD Don’t judge, it was yummy the next day!)

I like to grab STRAWS to finish off the melted part of the dessert! It’s like drinking bubble tea. 2 desserts in one! What a Steal! 😎

Service:                              3.6/5
The service was average, nothing remarkable. Once they call your order you go up to the front to grab your food back to the tables. Nancy: 3.5.

TBH. This will be updated as we are getting more places with bingsu/shaved ice desserts and we can compare to it!
