A Tiramisu Kind of Halloween!

pa293564.jpg

Happy Halloween Everyone!!! Eeek! I absolutely cannot wait to take the kiddos out trick or treating!! (And maybe sneak a few candies or two from their baskets).

I first made tiramisu because it was one of my friend’s favourite desserts! So I tried my best to come up with a recipe that worked for their tastes~ Still experimenting around. Definitely the kind of eggs you have seem to make the difference. AND most important is to not soak your ladyfingers in the coffee and rum mixture for too long or else you’re going to have a very soggy tiramisu.

I found some passion fruit on sale! I was originally going to put it on the cake… but it really didn’t match so just settled on having it drizzled in the raspberries ahaha. The raspberries worked really well this as it provided that tartness for that contrast with the sweet dessert. Yeah, I made the tiramisu too sweet this time for my liking… BUT it seems like we all liked the hint of rose in the whip cream! 😀

The Charcoal Ice Cream Cone: iHalo Krunch

Nana and I went to a trip to Toronto and one of the must-go places on our list was iHaloKrunch. While we admit it may be a bit overhyped, we still think it was definitely worth the trip there!

iHaloKrunch makes their waffle cones in-store, so it smells amazing when you walk in. The special part is that the waffle cones are BLACK. The secret ingredient? Activated charcoal.

We think we lined up for almost 45 minutes? It wasn’t too bad. The store is actually really small, and can only fit around 12 people at a time, and therefore the line-up spilt all the way outside. We thought it was really nice that they put out signs to let their customers know not to block the entrances of the other stores next to them (not the one shown above).

While we were bored, we entertained ourselves with the cute pug sitting on the bench!

WE FINALLY MADE IT IN! See what I mean by how small it is??

They have other ice cream and sorbet options too. Though the flavours were quite standard and we came to Toronto to try more adventurous stuff hehe. E.g. They had mint chocolate chip, strawberry, chocolate etc. (Looked really yummy though).

While standing in line I had the hardest time deciding what flavour to get (I wanted to try everythinggggg). We were debating: matcha with charcoal, ube (taro) with charcoal, matcha with vanilla? Luckily more and more people left the shop with this 3 flavour combo which we couldn’t resist getting ourselves. Ube, charcoal and matcha!

Now, the matcha isn’t really the usual matcha that has its depth and bit of bitterness to it. It’s more of a sweet green tea flavour. As for the ube (taro), it reminds me of the artificial taro powder used in bubble teas. Though that’s understandable as it’s really hard to get that nice purple along with a strong taste from the taro alone. As for the charcoal flavour… hm can’t quite put a finger on it to describe the taste! Like.. roasted black sesame? But it’s not as fragrant. They did infuse some coconut flavour in it though!

Our favourite part of the soft serve has to be the cone. It is very addicting! We love how the cones are made in-store. However the soft serve melted REALLY fast and although they did try to put in some marshmallow fluff at the bottom of the cone, the ice cream still dripped through :'(. We had to devour the ice cream as fast as possible at a nearby park across the street!!

Anyways, if you’re in Toronto, this is a must-try! Yummy yummy in my tummy. Though don’t be like us in trying to take a minute to snap some photos of it as it melts extremely fast!

Japanese Snacks Volume II.

While making our way up tothe famous Gujo-Hachiman castle, Lisa and I stopped at a little store for a break (it was really hot and humid outside too). Lisa got an ice udon!

On the way to school (Nagoya University of Commerce and Business) there is this MacDonald’s that always calls out to me. This day I was weak because of the limited edition chocolate pumpkin fries that came out!

They only gave one packet filled with essentially orange coloured sugar icing and chocolate sauce 😦 But the experience is cool haha.

If you haven’t tried it, I highly recommend the Yuzu drinks (basically like pomelo). The taste is so fragrant and refreshing! You may hear people call it the Japanese Lime XD.

This dessert I found in the grocery store is so yummy! Light taste of taro with a nice chestnut sauce. The texture is like cutting into custard pudding. This is a light dessert, so if you are craving a ooey gooey indulgent chocolate desserts, this won’t do the trick.

I ate ice cream at least 3 times a week while living in Japan. This was yet another thing I got from the Lawson 100 yen store. It contains your typical melon flavour and the sorbet is very smooth so you can spoon out a nice chunk each time! I had a bit of a trouble getting it out so make sure you have a smaller spoon hehe.

I’m not kidding when I say I ate a lot of ice cream desserts:
