Cooking in Japan

While I’m off to Japan for 5 months, I get a lovely room in the Chiyoda residence. Unfortunately, I only have one stove up, limited tools, sauces and ingredients to play with. This starts my journey for simpler and cheaper dishes as I live the poor student life. 🙂 Enjoy~ (I don’t really follow recipes when I’m trying to make do with what I have, but if you’re really interested to know, feel free to leave a comment!)

I wish missing vegetables in the second week in Japan. This curry is really hearty haha. Made enough for Lisa and Jason~
Could’ve cooked the carrots a tad longer so everything is just soft! I added a splash of apple juice to the curry to add some sweetness and tanginess!
Tofu is always on sale, added some chicken, garlic and ponzu sauce!
Strangely, I love using fruit in dishes. I was particularly craving apples that day.
I played around with my ham cutter! Japan loves to put effort in making their bentos. Just used some leftovers and fried some udon with bean sprouts (which is really cheap).
Pickled daikon is my favourite. I was in a crazy mood for soups.
By the end of the month, I needed a grilled cheese sandwich!
Mozzerella cheese for me! I added some sweet chili sauce to add a bit of flavour.
Okra, and leftover hamburger steak meat. I haven’t had to use oil for these kinds of dishes and it still has a lot of flavour!

Japanese Snacks Vol. I

Since I’m in Japan, I’m determined to try as many snacks as possible!!! (We’ll see how adventurous I get)… though I guess I can cheat a little since I can read it XD.

Honey Butter Chips! I find the Calbee version not as strong of a flavour though. (You’d need to eat quite a bit of pieces before you get hooked hehe)

Asian pear drinks are LOVE. Except I didn’t realize it was an alcoholic beverage and I had a nice sleep~
Jason got these Takoyaki flavoured rings! Because it’s a puff it was light in flavour.
It was addicting, but I’m not sure if it was because we were hungry.
Mentaiko!! I was really excited about this.
Except it tasted like any of those typical fried, crispy cracker snacks.
Preston’s favourite jellybeans, which ultimately became my favourite too. When first biting into it you get a full coat of sugar, it’s a bit of a gritty texture, but it’s just so packed with flavour!
Melon bread!!
They needed double the cream in this one.
To be honest, I bought this for the looks, and it’s not everyday one sees caramel cinnamon sugar!
It’s like a nice crispy ice cream cone outside with ice cream and chestnut paste on the inside. It was a bit too sweet for my liking.
Animal crackers bring back so many memories. But I absolutely love the type of animals they have in this box!
These just taste like what it’s called: chocolate. flakes.
I somehow always love pizza flavoured snacks. This is no exception! Ruffle like chips that made sure each bite had punch!
Grape flavoured gummy candy
It was more on the soft gummy side that has been dusted with sugar. (pssst I prefer the fettucine brand more)
I was so intrigued by its shape, I had to get it.
Where do I begin to describe this. A nice thin crispy outer layer, crunchy top chocolate layer, followed by chocolate ice cream and vanilla ice cream, all wrapped with another layer of chocolate~
I got this at some 100 yen shop.
It was rice, with mushrooms, bamboo shoots, carrots.. will not eat again. Figs sold separately.

Bubble Tea

Avocado bubble tea. The bubble tea place inside T&T is always my go-to never-fails-me bubble tea. I love getting the fruit bubble teas here the most, not too sweet and tastes much more fresh!
Three guys (pudding, grass jelly). Sorry about photo quality. I always get the 50% sugar with this one. But just overall nice milk tea flavour. Can’t go wrong with this!
My next favourite flavours: taro, and lemon yakult. Warning that the tapioca in the taro is neither big enough to nicely chew or small enough to swallow without chewing haha. i may get 25 or 50% sugar!
Yesssss. Passion Fruit Green Tea. It’ll put your friend’s bubble tea to the test with its fragrance. 50% sugar is a must!
Unfortunately, this isn’t my preferred bubble tea. This Teapsy is found at the U of A. They don’t make the bubble teas consistently good. I got black tea peach. Not sure what Kelly got again oops.
